An official statistic released by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) revealed the advanced position that the African continent has come to occupy in the World Cup finals record, ranking third among the continents with the most victories in the tournament's history up to the end of the Qatar 2022 edition.

According to the released figures, African teams have recorded 37 victories out of 162 matches played in various World Cup editions, ranking behind Europe, which leads with 468 wins out of 808 matches, and South American teams in second place with 185 victories out of 358 matches.

These figures reflect the significant development of African football in recent decades, as the continent's teams have transitioned from merely symbolic participation in the tournament to genuinely competing for top positions and challenging major world teams.

On the continental ranking front, Africa came ahead of the North and Central America and Caribbean Confederation, which recorded 34 wins, while Asia ranked fifth with 25 victories, and Oceania was at the bottom of the list with only one win.

The Moroccan national team stands out as one of the key contributors to enhancing Africa's achievements in recent years, having marked a historic accomplishment in the Qatar 2022 World Cup by securing four significant victories against Belgium, Canada, Spain, and Portugal.

Reaching the World Cup semi-finals was an unprecedented event in the history of the African continent and the Arab world for the "Atlas Lions," as they became the first African team to reach this stage, opening the door to greater ambitions for African teams in future competitions.

At the level of African national teams with the most World Cup victories, Nigeria tops the list with 6 wins, while Morocco shares second place with Cameroon, Ghana, and Senegal, each with 5 wins. They are ahead of Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Tunisia, each of which has 3 wins.

On the other hand, European teams continue their historical dominance in the tournament, with Germany leading the list with the most wins at 68, followed by Italy with 45, then France with 39, England with 32, and Spain with 31, while the Netherlands comes in sixth with 30 wins.

With the approach of the 2026 World Cup, featuring an expanded participation of 48 teams, African teams are eagerly anticipating a new opportunity to enhance their historical presence in the tournament. They aim to build on recent achievements that have brought the continent back to the forefront of global football, most notably the historic accomplishment of the Moroccan team in the Qatar World Cup.
