Setting the Start Date for the Spanish League Season 2026/2027

The debate over the start date of the Spanish League for the 2026/2027 season has been resolved after the arbitration decision between the Spanish League Association and the Spanish Football Players' Association approved the start of the tournament over the weekend of August 15 and 16.

The Spanish news agency reported that the arbitrator adopted the proposal submitted by the Spanish League Association, rejecting the players' association's request to postpone the start to August 23 due to the impact of the 2026 World Cup on the rest and preparation period for international players.

The decision also supported the league association's stance on concluding the second division matches, with the last round to be held on June 6, and the promotion play-off matches to be played between June 9 and 20.

The players' association believed that the set date for the season's start does not provide players participating in the World Cup with enough time to get the appropriate rest and physical preparation, expressing regret that economic and commercial considerations were prioritized over aspects related to players' health.

On the other hand, the Spanish League Association confirmed that the proposed schedule takes into account the exceptional circumstances associated with the World Cup and includes the possibility of postponing the first round matches for clubs with a large number of players participating in the advanced stages of the tournament.

The arbitration decision considered that the proposals of the Spanish League Association are in line with legal frameworks and achieve the necessary balance to ensure the competition proceeds naturally during the next season.
