Doubts About Araujo's Participation in His First World Cup Match

Sunday 07-06-2026
The absence of defender Ronald Araújo from Uruguay's recent training sessions has raised doubts about his participation in their first World Cup match against Saudi Arabia.

Araujo, the 27-year-old Barcelona player, is preparing with the Uruguay national team for the tournament. However, he did not participate in the last training session before traveling to the United States due to a slight muscle strain and a flu virus infection.

According to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," the coaching and medical staff of the national team decided to handle the player's condition cautiously and initiate a preventive treatment program to avoid any complications, which might lead him to rest during the first match.

The reports added that Araujo might start the match on the bench, with Guillermo Varela replacing him in the starting lineup.

His readiness is expected to be determined in the coming days, with expectations that he will be fully available for the second match against Cape Verde, as well as the third encounter against Spain at the conclusion of the group stage.
