Riquelme: Denial is Part of the Game, and Haaland Has a Release Clause

Thursday 04-06-2026
The candidate for the presidency of Real Madrid, Enrique Riquelme, made statements to the Spanish newspaper "AS," in which he discussed the possibility of signing the Norwegian star Erling Haaland and the Spanish midfielder Rodri if he wins the upcoming elections, affirming his commitment to his promises despite the denials issued by the players' circles and Manchester City.

Riquelme said: "The denial? It's part of the game, this also happened with Figo, and that's the nature of football. It's natural for the club to protect its player. We respect Manchester City, but we spoke before and after with Rodri's agent, and we are convinced that these two players will play for Real Madrid if I win the presidency."

He added, "Everything is clear and organized for us. We need to talk to Manchester City, and there are different circumstances between Rodri and Haaland, but we know there is a release clause in Haaland's contract."

Riquelme continued regarding the controversy surrounding his previous statements: "What happened on the El Hormiguero show was part of the election campaign. We understand that Manchester City may protect its player, and this is normal in football."

Regarding his ability to fulfill these promises if he wins, he said: "I have provided a personal guarantee, and if I do not fulfill these promises, I will pay the subscriptions of 100,000 Real Madrid members. I fully believe in my project, and I will not risk my personal or professional reputation or as a fan of the club."

Riquelme concluded his statements by saying: "There is no signed contract at the moment, but we are working with a clear vision, and we will do everything possible to bring these two players to Real Madrid, with full respect for Manchester City."
