Barcelona Most Affected by VAR Errors in La Liga

Tuesday 26-05-2026
Barcelona ended the 2025/2026 season as the team most subjected to refereeing errors related to video technology in the Spanish league, according to an analysis published by the specialized site 'Archivo Var' in evaluating refereeing decisions.

The analysis indicated that the Catalan team was subjected to 11 incorrect refereeing cases during the season, which is the highest number among La Liga clubs, ahead of Real Madrid, which came behind by just one case.

The source explained that the errors included goals that were incorrectly canceled or counted, penalties that were incorrectly awarded or ignored, in addition to direct red card decisions and errors in identifying player identities.

The report also highlighted the controversy associated with the semi-automatic offside system, which was implemented this season to reduce refereeing errors. However, the analysis considered that several cases raised doubts about the system's accuracy, especially since the decisions related to it rely on direct technical standards rather than discretionary ones.

This evaluation came after a season that saw Barcelona crowned with the La Liga title for the 29th time in its history, after securing the championship several rounds before the end.

Barcelona had previously expressed its objection to some refereeing decisions, as Spanish media reported that Rafa Yuste sent an official letter on behalf of the club to the Spanish Football Federation, the referees committee, and video technology officials, expressing the management's concern about the recurrence of decisions that the club considered inconsistent and harmful to the team during the season.
