Al-Zaidi Receives the Iraqi National Team Delegation Before Heading to Spain

Thursday 21-05-2026
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi today received the national football team delegation before its departure to Spain, where the Lions of Mesopotamia will enter a closed training camp lasting for weeks as part of the final preparations for the World Cup finals.

The meeting was symbolic and loaded with messages, as the Prime Minister was keen to meet the players and the technical staff led by Graham Arnold, in a move aimed at boosting morale and confirming full governmental support for the team before the global event.

Al-Zaidi said during his speech to the delegation: "I wish you success and good fortune in the World Cup, and we have full confidence in your abilities. You will reflect the image of Iraq’s present as well as its history. We hope you will bring smiles to the faces of Iraqis, and we want you to play without any psychological pressure. All the needs you require will be available to you, and there are also special gifts for you if you achieve something remarkable in the World Cup."

Al-Zaidi's speech carried more than one message. The first was to reassure the players that the government side will provide all the requirements for the camp and matches, including equipment, camps, and logistical arrangements. The second was to relieve psychological pressure on the players and remind them that representing Iraq in the World Cup is in itself a historic achievement, and what is required is to perform with a fighting spirit that reflects the identity of Iraqi football.

The team delegation will head directly to Spain to hold the external training camp, which includes two friendly matches against the Andorra and Spain national teams. The two matches are considered a real test before the start of the World Cup, as they will put Iraqi players against different football schools and give Arnold a final opportunity to solidify the main lineup.

The camp will also witness daily technical and analytical meetings, in addition to intensive training units focusing on the physical and tactical aspects, as the technical staff seeks to reach the highest possible readiness.

Al-Zaidi's announcement of "special gifts" in case of achieving success in the World Cup falls within attempts to motivate the players both morally and materially. But more important than the material aspect is the political and popular message that the meeting carries: today, the team is a comprehensive national project, and success in it means raising Iraq's name high in international forums.
