Concern in Barcelona After Fermín López's Injury

Monday 18-05-2026
A state of concern prevails within Barcelona Club after the injury sustained by their young player Fermín López during the match against Real Betis, with the World Cup competitions approaching.

The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' reported that Fermín felt pain in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot after receiving a strong blow during the match, which prompted the technical and medical staff to substitute him at halftime and not risk him continuing the match.

The newspaper explained that the player will undergo precise medical examinations to determine the nature and severity of the injury, especially since any fracture in this area could threaten his participation in the World Cup or delay his appearance in the tournament.

The fifth metatarsal is one of the bones most susceptible to stress fractures due to match pressure or strong tackles, and Fermín's playing style, which is based on strength and aggression, increases the likelihood of him sustaining such injuries. If a fracture is confirmed that requires surgical intervention, the absence period could extend to at least two months.

These developments come at a sensitive time for the Spanish player, as Luis de la Fuente, the coach of the Spanish national team, prepares to announce the squad list on May 25th.

The Spanish national team is scheduled to start its World Cup journey on June 15th against Cape Verde, while the tournament continues until July 19th.

Fermín has an impressive record with the Spanish national team recently, having won the Euro 2024 title before contributing to Spain's gold medal win at the Paris Olympics, scoring six goals during the tournament, including two in the final match against the French national team.
