Monday 18-05-2026
Press reports revealed that Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho has made his final decision to leave Benfica, after informing the club's management of his intention to end his journey with them, in preparation for taking on the task of coaching Real Madrid in the upcoming phase, with a contract extending for two seasons with an option to extend for a third season.

According to the Spanish newspaper 'Sport', Mourinho will hold a meeting today with Benfica president Rui Costa to directly inform him of rejecting the renewal offer made by the club, in addition to activating the contract termination clause, which could amount to about 7 million euros according to some sources.

The newspaper explained that the renewal offer from Benfica extended until 2029, and the Portuguese coach was indeed close to signing it before receiving the surprising offer from Real Madrid, which completely changed his direction.

The report added that Mourinho carefully studied the new sports project before making his final decision, ultimately agreeing to lead Real Madrid after reaching an agreement on his technical demands, which included important reinforcements for the team, especially in the defense and midfield positions, aiming to rebuild the royal team.

In contrast, Benfica has begun to move quickly to search for a replacement, with the name of Portuguese coach Marco Silva emerging as one of the top candidates to take over the technical leadership. It is expected that the official announcement of Mourinho's deal with Real Madrid will be made in the coming days or next week, after completing the final procedures.
