The Reason Behind the Postponement of Iraq's World Cup Squad Announcement

Thursday 14-05-2026
The Iraqi national team will enter a new phase of preparation for the 2026 World Cup finals, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, through a training camp in Spain aimed at enhancing technical and physical readiness before the global event.

The technical staff, led by Australian Graham Arnold, has completed the preparation of the initial squad list and sent it to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) within the deadline set for May 13. The list includes 35 players selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of their performance over the past period, especially after facing Bolivia in the global playoff in early April.

Despite sending the initial list, Arnold decided to postpone the announcement of the final 26-player squad until just before the final deadline on June 2. The reason is the technical staff's desire to monitor the physical condition of some players who are suffering from injuries, such as Ahmed McKenzie, Youssef Amin, Ayman Hussein, and Dario Namo.

The coach wants to ensure entering the World Cup with a complete squad free of injuries and fatigue, so the Spain camp will be the last opportunity to evaluate everyone directly before the final decision.

The Lions of Mesopotamia delegation will leave Baghdad on May 20, heading to Spain for a training camp that will continue until June 5. The camp will focus heavily on tactical aspects and physical fitness, in addition to friendly matches that will provide the technical staff with a clear picture of readiness.

The first of these encounters will be against the Andorra national team on May 29, a match Arnold considers a practical test to measure the players' cohesion before announcing the final list.

The Australian coach explained to the assisting staff that he will rely on the most prepared players in his final selections while maintaining the core of the team that played in the qualifiers and playoffs. The goal is to enter the World Cup with a balanced squad capable of competing at high levels in the tournament.
