Barcelona Requests License to Use Montjuïc Stadium in Anticipation of Camp Nou Delays

Wednesday 13-05-2026
The Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" reported that FC Barcelona has submitted a request to the Barcelona City Council for a license to use the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium during the first half of the 2027/2028 season, in anticipation of potential delays in the installation of the new Camp Nou stadium roof.

According to the newspaper, this step is part of a precautionary plan by the Catalan club, in light of the scheduled works during the summer of 2027, which include the installation of the new stadium roof, one of the most complex phases of the project. The club's technical studies indicate that the duration of these works may extend between four and five months, which might force the team to play its matches away from its home stadium at the start of the official season.

The new roof will be one of the most prominent features of the Camp Nou stadium development project. It includes a tensioned structure made of cables to cover all the stands, with an area of up to 48,000 square meters, alongside the installation of 18,000 square meters of solar panels and a rainwater collection system.

The report indicated that the option to expand the Johan Cruyff Stadium is still on the table, aiming to increase its capacity to 10,000 spectators instead of the current 6,000. However, the option of playing at the Montjuïc Stadium seems more likely, given the greater economic return and its capacity, which reached 50,319 spectators during the El Clasico match in the 2024/2025 season.

The newspaper explained that Barcelona's management believes that maintaining the Montjuic option provides the club with greater flexibility in case the work is delayed more than expected, whether on a logistical or economic level.

The official request submitted by the club aims to ensure obtaining the necessary permits early and to avoid any future obstacles, while maintaining the option to expand the Johan Cruyff Stadium and reserve the Montjuïc Stadium at the same time.
