Mehdi Benatia Approaches Saudi League

Tuesday 12-05-2026
French press reports have revealed that Moroccan Mehdi Benatia is close to ending his tenure at Olympique Marseille, as he is expected to leave his position as sporting director after the current season concludes.

According to reports, Benatia is preparing to leave after Marseille's last match against Rennes, in a move that could open the door for him to embark on a new experience outside the French league in the coming period.

The name of the former Moroccan international has been linked in recent weeks with a return to the Italian club Roma, where he previously played between 2013 and 2014. However, indications from Italy confirm that the "Wolves" management is leaning towards appointing Giovanni Manna, the former director of Napoli, to succeed Frederic Massara in the sports management.

On the other hand, Benatia is receiving increasing interest from the Saudi league, specifically from Al-Ittihad Club, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The club is searching for a new football director as the departure of Spaniard Ramon Planes approaches. The club's management has included Benatia's name on a shortlist of top candidates for the position in the upcoming phase.

The report indicated that Benatia's move to the Saudi league, should an official offer arrive and he agrees to it, might be seen as a less competitive step in sports terms compared to staying in Europe. However, on the other hand, it would represent a strong financial option.
