Sundowns Coach Sparks Crisis Before Champions League Final

Monday 11-05-2026
The atmosphere heated up early before the African Champions League final between the Royal Army and Mamelodi Sundowns, after the South African team's coach, Miguel Cardoso, sparked a new controversy with provocative statements regarding the leak of analytical materials related to his team to the Moroccan club.

During the press conference preceding the anticipated match, Cardoso revealed that the Royal Army obtained a "wide-angle" recording of the Sundowns' match against Kaizer Chiefs just one day after it took place. This type of video is typically used by technical teams for precise tactical analysis.

The Portuguese coach said that the Moroccan team already had this recording, adding that the video "was delivered," a remark that raised many questions about the possibility of an internal leak that gave the Royal Army access to sensitive technical details about their opponent before the continental final.

These recordings are among the most prominent modern analytical tools in football, as they allow technical teams to study collective movements, defensive positioning, play-building mechanisms, and tactical organization away from the ball. Such materials rarely reach competitors, especially before matches as significant as the Champions League final.

Although Cardozo did not directly accuse any party, he hinted at knowing the source of the leak, which heightened tensions and ignited a psychological war early on between the two teams ahead of the anticipated African clash.

The first leg of the match is scheduled to take place on May 17 in Pretoria, South Africa, while the return leg will be held at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on May 24, under the officiation of Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala.
