Kompany: This is What We Needed, and We Must Turn the Page Tomorrow
Thursday 07-05-2026
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany spoke in a press conference following the elimination from the UEFA Champions League semi-finals at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, where the team lost 5-4 in the first leg and then drew 1-1 in the second leg.

After the match at Allianz Arena, the coach said: "I can't stay frustrated for long, of course, we lost in the end two very close games against a very strong opponent, we needed to be more decisive."

He added, "Congratulations to Paris, our journey in the Champions League this season is over, but there will be another opportunity, and this motivates me. We have faced Paris five times, we won twice, lost twice, and drew once, which is today's match. We tried everything, and that must be said."

He continued, "I think our first half was really good, the only thing I must mention is that Paris defended the crosses amazingly, and they dealt excellently with the second balls, they were very active, and although we reached dangerous situations, they made sure we perhaps couldn't make the final touch."

Regarding his conversation with the referees after the match: "It's not just about those two incidents (not sending off Mendes and the handball by Neves), but when two or three or four players fall to the ground without reason, the five minutes are not actually played, and we wanted to continue, we could have had an extra minute or two if the time was counted correctly, and suddenly the game ended. All these details... and of course, we take 100% responsibility, in fact, the entire responsibility is on us, let's be clear. But there are three parties: Paris Saint-Germain, us, and the referees."

About the handball on Joao Neves: "I understand the rule, I understand it, but from what we saw, the ball came from a much further distance. It didn't touch the body first then the hand, it went directly to the hand. And whether it was played by his teammate or not, that's kind of nonsense. But in the end, these are the laws, and that's unfortunate."

He concluded: "For me, we must turn this page starting tomorrow, I know for some players it will be difficult, and that's normal, but for me, it's over, this will give me greater motivation. I have great respect for Paris Saint-Germain, look at what they have done in Europe over the past two years. I would like to face them again, but unfortunately, that's not possible this season. We will prepare to be stronger, we have progressed this season and we must continue to progress."
