18 Coaches in 6 Years: Wydad Suffering from Technical Instability
Wednesday 06-05-2026
Wydad Athletic Club continues to struggle with the lack of stability at the technical staff level, which has been clearly reflected in the team's results over recent years.

The club's management recently decided to part ways with French coach Patrice Carteron just 37 days after his appointment, a move that highlights the instability the team is experiencing, before temporarily assigning the task to former player Mohamed Benchrifa until the end of the current season.

Reports have revealed that the team has seen a large number of coaches over the past six years, with 18 coaches leading the team since 2020, averaging nearly three coaches per season, a clear indicator of the lack of technical continuity.

During this period, several names have returned to take charge of the team on more than one occasion, including Tunisian Faouzi Benzarti and Spaniard Juan Carlos Garrido, while Moroccan Hussein Benabicha led the team in just one match at the end of 2022, before being replaced by Tunisian Mehdi Nafti.

Tunisian Reda El-Fahel also had a short stint with the club, lasting no more than 24 days, during which he oversaw three matches, achieving one win, one draw, and one loss.

On the other hand, both Faouzi Benzarti and Walid Regragui stood out as exceptions in the series of changes, having succeeded in achieving technical stability and positive results.

Benzarti led Wydad in 46 matches with an average of 2.11 points per match, winning two Moroccan league titles and the African Super Cup, while Regragui managed the team in 48 matches with an average of 2.17 points per game, successfully leading them to win the Moroccan league and the CAF Champions League during the 2021-2022 season.
