FIFA Calls Iranian Federation for Crucial Talks on World Cup Participation
Wednesday 06-05-2026
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), led by Swiss President Gianni Infantino, has invited the Iranian Football Federation to a meeting at FIFA headquarters in Zurich to discuss Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to begin on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

According to "Agence France-Presse," the meeting is expected to be held before May 20th of this year, amid uncertainty regarding the participation of the Iranian team, given the political and military tensions that have erupted in the Middle East since last February, following the US attacks on Iran.

These developments come at a time when the Iranian Federation's delegation was absent from the recent FIFA conference in Vancouver, after Canada refused to grant a visa to the Iranian Federation's President, Mehdi Taj, which heightened tensions between the two parties and raised questions about future participation.

For its part, the Iranian federation insists on several conditions, most notably the prohibition of any political messages or statements during the national team's matches, the adoption of the official flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and clear guarantees concerning the security of the players, the technical staff, and the administration during the tournament.
