Failed Handshake Embarrasses Infantino at FIFA Congress
Friday 01-05-2026
The FIFA Congress in Vancouver witnessed an embarrassing moment for FIFA President Gianni Infantino after his attempt to organize a handshake between Palestinian Football Association President Jibril Rajoub and the Vice President of the Zionist Association, Sheikh Suleiman, failed during the closing session of the conference.

Rajoub refused to stand next to the Zionist official on the platform, a scene that caused tension in the hall, while Infantino tried to quickly move past the situation by talking about "joint work and giving hope to children," emphasizing that the issue is "complex."

On her part, Palestinian Federation Vice President Susan Shalabi told Reuters that Rajoub refused to shake hands because "he cannot shake hands with someone whom the occupying entity is trying to use to whitewash fascism and genocide," adding, "We are suffering."

At the same time, Infantino officially announced his intention to run for a new term as FIFA president in next year's elections, which will be held in Rabat, bringing him closer to remaining in his position for up to 15 years, following the amendment of FIFA's regulations regarding the number of presidential terms.
