Maguire: It Was a Tough Match, and This Made Us Trust Carrick
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire appeared in a press statement following the 2-1 victory over Brentford in the 34th round of the Premier League, at Old Trafford.
The player said: "It was a tough match, I think we started the game very well, and after 25 minutes they took control of the game, then we changed our style of play a bit in the second half, and we became more cohesive. We covered the field better, and the crosses reaching the penalty area decreased."
He added: "It's frustrating to concede a goal from the edge of the penalty area. We needed to move a little faster to block the shot and the ball. But it was comfortable except for the set-piece opportunity that hit the crossbar, our style of play helped us in the second half to reduce the chances against us, but overall I felt we could have performed better with the ball."
The English defender continued regarding the change in the game plan: "Honestly, I think changing the formation benefited us a lot. I think the results speak for themselves. So, I feel comfortable that we are able to play with both formations, I think we didn't cover the field well enough in the last 20 minutes of the first half, and we allowed too many balls into the penalty area, then they intensified their presence inside it as well, I think it's good that the coach realized that, and we changed the formation in the second half, and I felt much more comfortable."
He continued: "I think the results have greatly contributed to boosting our confidence in Michael Carrick. We had two tough matches when Michael first took charge, and I think everyone looked at them with concern, especially with the Arsenal and Manchester City matches, but we managed to collect the six points."
And he followed: "Everyone believed in our abilities, and we united. We have great confidence. We know we can score goals from anywhere. I think we can still improve a lot in this plan as well. I think we can work as a cohesive defensive line, and move faster on the field, as we should have done."
He concluded: "The results speak for themselves, since the coach took charge and changed the plan, we started achieving results. I think the previous matches, when Robin was here, were balanced, but we were always losing, now it seems the situation has changed, as we have become much better in both penalty areas, we defend our area much better, and we can be decisive in the opponent's area."
