Sunday 19-04-2026
The former Portuguese star Luis Figo spoke to the Spanish newspaper "Marca," discussing the major events of the current football season, particularly concerning Real Madrid, as well as the UEFA Champions League, the World Cup, and emerging talents in European football.

In his assessment of Real Madrid's season, Figo confirmed that the team went through an unsuccessful period, saying that the absence of titles always makes the season negative for the royal club. He added: "The truth is that the season was bad. For Real Madrid, if you don't win titles, it's always a negative season, and when championships are absent, it means things weren't going well."

Figo touched on the technical changes the club experienced between Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, noting that the transitional phase was not sufficient for an accurate judgment. He said, "I think he didn't have time, and we didn't even have time to conduct a real analysis of the months he spent; it was very complicated."

Regarding the UEFA Champions League, Figo revealed his contenders for the title this season, choosing Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. He explained: "Based on their performances, my favorite teams are Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. They are both very strong teams and play beautiful football, but anything is possible at this stage of the tournament."

He also touched on the upcoming World Cup that will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, noting that historically, the Portuguese team is not among the top contenders, but it possesses high quality, alongside strong teams such as France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and England, emphasizing that the competition will be open among these major teams.

Figo concluded his remarks by praising the emerging talents in European football, foremost among them the young star Lamine Yamal, saying: "He is an amazing talent, and I hope he continues to develop and builds a great football career."
