UEFA Referees Association President Attends Barcelona vs Atletico Clash
Tuesday 14-04-2026
All eyes are on the anticipated clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at the Metropolitano Stadium, as part of the UEFA Champions League, with special attention on the performance of the officiating team led by French referee Clément Turpin.

According to what was revealed by the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," the Italian Roberto Rosetti, head of the UEFA Referees Committee, will be present in the stands of the stadium to closely monitor the referee's performance in a match that is of great interest to the continental federation.

This attention comes after the refereeing controversy witnessed in the first leg, which was officiated by Romanian referee Stefan Kovacs, particularly in the incident involving Boubel that prompted the Catalan team to file an official complaint with UEFA, increasing the sensitivity of the return match.

According to the same source, Rosetti's visit to the Spanish capital is not limited to attending the match only; it also coincides with meetings he is holding with Spanish media during this period as part of his official activities.

Rosetti usually serves as the refereeing observer in some Champions League matches, but for the current match, this task will be undertaken by the German Peter Sippel. Meanwhile, the presence of the head of the referees' committee himself reflects the importance of the match at the European level.

Turban is considered one of the most prominent referees on the continent, as he is officiating his seventh match in the current edition of the UEFA Champions League. He previously officiated a match for Atlético Madrid, leading them to a 3-2 victory over Club Brugge on February 24th in the playoff stage.

The French referee has a previous record with Atletico, having officiated eight matches for them, during which they achieved three wins, three draws, and suffered two defeats. This will be the sixth match he officiates for Barcelona in European competitions, where the team has achieved two wins, one draw, and lost two matches.

The last match Turpin officiated for Barcelona was the first leg of the semi-final last season, which ended in a 3-3 draw against Inter Milan. The previous encounter dates back to the 2022/2023 season in the Europa League, when the Catalan team lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

In light of these circumstances, the European summit is closely monitored in terms of officiating, with hopes that the match will conclude fairly, reflecting the values of continental competition.
