Monday 06-04-2026
After securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup for the second time in its history, following a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in the global playoff, the Iraqi national team aims to play a high-level friendly match on its home ground in the city of Basra. This is part of a comprehensive preparation plan for the tournament finals hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 'Lions of Mesopotamia' will be in Group Nine alongside France, Norway, and Senegal, having become the last team to join the qualified ranks.

According to exclusive sources for the winwin platform, the Iraqi Football Association is working on arranging a major friendly match in Basra as part of the team's preparation program for the 2026 World Cup. This is within a comprehensive technical plan aimed at enhancing the players' readiness in the best possible way before the awaited global event.

The sources added that coach Graham Arnold requested an early gathering of players immediately after his current vacation in Australia. He is expected to return from Sydney to Baghdad in about a month to begin preparing the team for the special preparation phase for the complex matches in the World Cup.

The Iraqi national team's camp is scheduled to start on the 25th of next month in Basra Province, where the team will enter a training assembly at the sports city. This will include an important friendly match against a major team from Africa or Europe, as part of a qualitative preparation program targeting the enhancement of technical and physical readiness before the tournament.

According to the current plan, the anticipated friendly match is expected to take place on May 29th at Basra International Stadium. The federation is working on finalizing the agreement with the opposing team, alongside completing the organizational and technical aspects of the match, which will represent the kickoff of the Lions of Mesopotamia's preparations for the World Cup.

In the same context, the possibility of playing two friendlies outside Iraq remains strong, with a preliminary agreement to face Spain on June 4th in the city of La Coruña. There are also ongoing efforts to secure a second international friendly match as part of the preparation program for the 2026 World Cup finals.
