Kimmich: Mbappe is a Deadly Weapon, and Here's How We Can Beat Real Madrid
Monday 06-04-2026
Bayern Munich defender Joshua Kimmich appeared in a press conference to talk about tomorrow's match against Real Madrid, in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Kimmich said in his speech: "In general, in every match, we try to leave our mark. Real Madrid has a unique style and can create danger at any moment. It will be important to impose our strengths on the field. And of course, we will also try to adapt a little to Real Madrid's playing style."

He added: "What do you remember from the last encounter against Real Madrid? After the first leg, I felt we could have won by a larger margin. In the return leg, Real Madrid was clearly better, then Alphonso Davies scored a fantastic goal that gave us the lead. We returned to the field feeling we could have done better. But this year we are not suffering from injuries, which was something that happened a lot when we came to play here. We are very happy to have all players available."

He continued: "The atmosphere and fans here are special. We often came here with good intentions but left disappointed. This time the return leg will be in Munich, which gives us an advantage."

He added further: "Harry Kane is extremely important to us, that's clear. He is a key element in our playing style because he is not just a striker who finishes attacks. He is a natural leader and a real role model. He has a distinctive mentality for a striker. It will be important to have him on the field tomorrow to provide leadership for the team."

He followed: "Did you watch Real Madrid's matches against Manchester City? I didn't watch the matches, but this is Real Madrid, and here things are sometimes different. We might have expected Manchester City to dominate. So it was impressive to see them qualify. City and Real Madrid have met many times, and Real has qualified several times even when we thought they didn't deserve it, but this time against City, they deserved to qualify."

He stressed: "If you want to beat Real Madrid, you have to be at your best mentally and tactically. We are all very excited here. We are happy for the opportunity to play here tomorrow. This is the highest level in football, and it's what we dream of as players. We look forward to tomorrow's battle, it's always a very special match. For me, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are the two biggest clubs in the world."

He explained: "Our coach usually doesn't make many changes for each match. But we all feel that this quarter-final encounter against Real Madrid is very special. We are very excited about it. When I was a child, I used to come to watch the stadium even when there was no match, and since then I realized how great this place is. This is not an ordinary moment. We train every day for such moments, and I hope we deliver a good match tomorrow."

About the young player Tom Bischoff: "His situation reminds me a little of my situation eleven years ago. We quickly saw that he has a great mentality and gives his all. Tom can also play as a left-back. Alongside Harry Kane, Tom has the best shot in the team, which is why we talk about him a lot. He changed the rhythm of the match against Freiburg. He also shows the team that thanks to our mentality and quality, we can highlight players like him, not just Harry Kane, Michael Olise, or Luis Diaz, but also young players like Tom. It was an important signal for the team."

He concluded: "Kylian Mbappe helps any team he plays for, he has exceptional individual quality, and he is the captain of the French national team. This season he has decided many matches, even in close encounters. He is a deadly weapon. I have played against him many times and we know what awaits us."
