The Italian team lost the European playoff final qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout, after the match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time at Bilino Polje Stadium.

The Italian team initially took the lead in the 15th minute through Moise Kean with a spectacular shot, before facing a significant setback with the sending off of their player Bastoni in the 42nd minute, forcing the team to complete the match with ten players.

Bosnia and Herzegovina came back into the match in the 79th minute through Haris Tabakovic, scoring the equalizer and pushing the game into extra time and then to penalties, which favored Bosnia and Herzegovina with a 4-1 result.

As a result, the Italian team will miss the World Cup finals for the third consecutive time, a major surprise at the European level, amidst the shock of Italian fans.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will be in Group B along with Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland.
