The Rule That Denies Barcelona Home Advantage Against Atletico Madrid
Thursday 19-03-2026
The UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid raised widespread questions among the Catalan team's fans, after it was decided that the second leg would be played away, despite Barcelona's higher ranking than their opponent in the league standings.

The Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" reported that the reason is due to the changes introduced by UEFA to the tournament system this season. The advantage of playing the second leg at home is no longer solely linked to the teams' standings in the league phase, but can now be transferred between clubs during the knockout stages.

According to the new system, the top-ranked teams in the league stage gain the advantage of playing the second leg at home in the advanced rounds. However, this advantage can be transferred to another team if they succeed in eliminating the higher-ranked team, which is what happened in this case.

The newspaper explained that Atletico Madrid, which finished the league stage in fourteenth place, played in the playoffs before successfully eliminating Tottenham, who were in fourth place, in the round of 16. This secured their spot in the tournament path, including the advantage of playing the second leg at home.

On the other hand, Barcelona finished the league stage in fifth place and benefited from an advantage in their match against Newcastle. However, they lost this advantage in the next round due to this new system.

Accordingly, the first leg between the two teams will be held at Spotify Camp Nou on April 8, while the decisive second leg will be played at the Metropolitano Stadium on April 14, as reported by the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

The importance of the encounter is not limited to organizational aspects only, but also extends to its historical dimension, as this will be the third meeting between the two teams in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, with Atletico Madrid having prevailed in the previous two occasions.

The program will also feature consecutive encounters between the two teams, as they will meet three times within two weeks, including a match in the Spanish League on April 4th, as Barcelona seeks to break the European jinx and make up for their recent exit from the King's Cup.
