Official: UEFA Announces Cancellation of the Finalissima Cup Final
The Union of European Football Associations officially announced the cancellation of the Finalissima Cup final match between the national teams of Spain and Argentina, which was scheduled to take place on March 27 in Doha, Qatar.
The decision came as a result of the current political situation in the region, including the Iranian attack on Gulf countries, which prevented the match from being held as planned, according to the official statement issued by the Union of European Football Associations.
The statement confirmed that the Union of European Football Associations, in cooperation with the organizing authorities in Qatar, made intensive efforts to save the match, including considering several alternatives to hold it in a short period, but all proposed options were rejected by the Argentine Football Association.
The first option was to hold the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on March 27 with an equal distribution of fans between the two teams, but Argentina rejected this proposal. The second option was to organize the match on a home-and-away basis, the first in Madrid and the second in Buenos Aires during the international break, but it was also rejected.
The statement noted that the Union of European Football Associations also tried to agree with Argentina to hold the match in a neutral stadium in Europe, either on the original date of March 27 or an alternative date of March 30, but this proposal was also rejected. Argentina suggested postponing the match until after the World Cup, but Spain's schedule did not allow for that.
UEFA concluded its statement by thanking Real Madrid Club, the organizing committee, and the Qatari authorities for their great efforts, and the Spanish Football Federation for its flexibility and cooperation in all the options proposed during the preparation period for this match.
