Elche Seeks to Break the Bernabéu Curse
Saturday 14-03-2026
The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' revealed that Elche faces a very difficult history when visiting Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, as the team has not succeeded in achieving any victory there for 66 years.

According to the Spanish newspaper, Elche has played 24 away matches against Real Madrid at their historic stadium, managing only four draws, while conceding 89 goals and scoring just 22.

Elche's first visits to Real Madrid's stadium in La Liga date back to the late 1950s, where the team suffered two heavy defeats in the first two matches, losing 11-2 in the 1959/1960 season, and then another heavy defeat of 8-0 in the 1960/1961 season, which are among the biggest defeats in the club's history.

The report also pointed out that Elche's last visit to the Santiago Bernabéu ended in a heavy defeat by four goals to nil on February 15, 2023, with Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema scoring twice from penalties, in addition to a goal by Luka Modric, sealing the match early with three goals in the first half.

In contrast, Elche has only managed four draws at Real Madrid's stronghold throughout its history, the most recent being on January 23, 2022, when the match ended 2-2. This encounter was the closest the team came to achieving its first victory in Madrid, having led by two goals scored by Lucas Boyé in the 42nd minute and Pere Milla in the 76th minute.

However, Real Madrid managed to come back in the final moments, reducing the deficit with a penalty scored by Luka Modric in the 82nd minute after a VAR intervention, before Éder Militão scored a dramatic equalizer with a header in the 92nd minute.

The newspaper explained that Elche's first draw at Real Madrid's stadium came after nine consecutive defeats, in the 1968/1969 season when the match ended 1-1, with Berry equalizing the lead scored by Rodríguez.

Another encounter between the two teams ended 1-1 in the 1970/1971 season, with Elche taking the lead through Juan Carlos before Fernando Zunzunegui equalized in the 84th minute, and in the 1975/1976 season, the match ended 2-2, with Berry scoring twice for Real Madrid, while Aníbal Montero and Ricardo González scored for Elche.

Elche also visited the Santiago Bernabéu twice in the Copa del Rey without achieving any victory. In the 1961/1962 season, in the round of 16, the team lost 5-1 after the first leg ended with a 4-3 win for Real Madrid. In the fourth round of the 1988/1989 season, the team drew 1-1 in Madrid, but the result was not enough after losing the first leg at home 2-1.

Thus, Elche enters its anticipated encounter against Real Madrid carrying a very challenging record at the Santiago Bernabéu, amid a long history of negative results against the royal team.
