Monday 02-03-2026
Swedish coach Massoud Meral confirmed that the Iraqi national team possesses elements capable of making a difference in the upcoming confrontation within the global playoff qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, noting that the chances of the 'Lions of Mesopotamia' are strong if the strengths available in the lineup are well utilized.

The Iraqi national team is preparing to face the winner of the Bolivia and Suriname match in the decisive encounter that will take place in Monterrey, Mexico, on April 1st, in a single match that will determine the ticket to the World Cup.

In his statements to the media, Meral explained that Iraq has a distinguished group of players capable of making an impact, stating that some names deserve to return to the forefront, notably Duhok player Peter Korkis, whom he sees as a technical value capable of making a contribution if called upon again.

He added that there are other players who form a technical weight, including Amir Al-Amari, alongside Ibrahim Bayesh, whose performance he recently followed in the UAE league, praising the good level he presented, reflecting his rising readiness. He also expressed his admiration for defender Zaid Tahseen, a professional at Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor, confirming that the backline includes promising elements that can be relied upon.

The Swedish coach pointed out that the Iraqi national team enjoys a clear advantage in the wing positions, where multiple options provide the technical staff with high tactical flexibility. He considered that superiority on the flanks could be the decisive factor in the playoff match, expecting the outcome to largely depend on what the players deliver on the right and left sides.

Meral talked about striker Mohannad Ali, explaining that he presented remarkable levels in the UAE league before being hindered by injury, confirming that his return to full readiness will give the team a significant offensive boost, given his experience and expertise in crucial international matches.

In his concluding remarks, Meral emphasized the importance of coach Graham Arnold selecting the most ready elements, beyond just names, since the match is singular and does not tolerate mistakes. He also called for providing all ideal conditions early to ensure the team enters the confrontation with the best possible preparation.

It is noteworthy that Massoud Meral previously worked in the Iraqi league, where he led the Duhok team to win the Gulf Clubs Champions Cup and contributed to reaching advanced stages in local tournaments, before later facing a suspension penalty.
