Benfica Suspends Membership of Five Members Due to Racist Acts

Benfica club announced the suspension of five of its members following their involvement in racist acts during the match against Real Madrid at the Estádio da Luz.

The club stated in an official announcement that these racist actions are not in line with the values and principles by which the club is governed, affirming that a disciplinary file has been opened against these members, which may lead to their expulsion according to the club's internal regulations.

Benfica clarified that this measure is part of its ongoing commitment to combating any racist behavior within the club's facilities, emphasizing that it will take strict actions against any conduct that threatens the values of the club, sport, or society.

The statement added: "Benfica is aware that the suspension of membership and cancellation of special cards for the five members came after the initiation of a disciplinary procedure that may end with the imposition of the maximum penalty stipulated in the regulations, which is expulsion."

The club confirmed that the internal investigation was the result of inappropriate and racist behavior by some members during the Benfica vs. Real Madrid match on February 17. It reaffirmed its steadfast stance of zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or racism and stated that it would continue to act firmly to protect the values of the club and the sports community.
