Spalletti: We Have the Ability to Prove Ourselves Against Any Team, That's Why I Made the Changes
Luciano Spalletti, the Juventus coach, admitted that his team should have displayed a higher level of quality and more speed in their 0-0 draw with Monaco, but he expressed confidence in his team's ability to "prove themselves" in the Champions League.
The Italian team knew it had secured a playoff spot and seemed content with a draw at Stade Louis II. Despite making several changes to the starting lineup, Juventus managed to maintain a draw with Monaco, which finished the league stage of the Champions League without a home defeat.
Spalletti said: "There was some fatigue building up, so I made some changes to inject more energy and create a better pace. We didn't succeed in that, but we faced a team that forced us to retreat 100 meters quickly with strength and aggression; their counterattacks were very tiring."
He added: "The players who came in did not perform poorly, but when the overall quality level dropped, the performance of individuals also declined."
Spalletti pointed out that Juventus started the Champions League with difficulty, after three draws in the first four matches, but a series of three consecutive victories in addition to this draw represents a clear improvement.
He explained: "There is greater self-confidence now, which allows you to assert your identity. We needed to show harmony, but we didn't do that today in terms of pace, solidity, and playing on the wings when in possession. It was a tough match; the opposing team was aggressive, and we made many passing errors, so we lacked quality. We played too slowly, and that's something I will discuss with the team. We performed well defensively against their counterattacks, but from midfield forward, we should have had greater quality."
Juventus is in thirteenth place and will face the winner of the match between Club Brugge or Galatasaray in the playoffs. Then, in the round of 16, their opponent will be either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.
When asked about the possibility of facing former Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Spalletti smiled and said, "We have to face everyone, we have the ability to prove ourselves against any team. Today, we faced sharp and fast strikers as well, and that's something we have to deal with."
