Mbappé: We Deserve the Loss, All the Blame is on Us
Real Madrid's star forward Kylian Mbappe appeared in a press statement following the 4-2 loss against Benfica in the final round of the Champions League group stage, at the Estádio da Luz.
The French star said: "In football, matches start from the first minute, not the 45th, and that's why the defeat in the end is deserved."
He added, "I can't say the loss was undeserved because we didn't play to win this match. We didn't play well, and they played well. Benfica at home is always a tough opponent. We knew that beforehand, and I believe the blame lies with us."
He added about the supplement: "We will see what happens, but it is possible that we will return here, and if that happens, we will return with a different intention. The first balls and the tackles they won are not a matter of quality or tactical plans, but rather a matter of having a greater desire than the opponent."
He concluded: "It was clear that Benfica was playing for their lives, but it wasn't clear that we were playing for ours. That was the biggest problem in the match. Initially, both teams had something to play for; we were aiming to be among the top eight, and they were aiming to enter the top 24. We saw Benfica, but we didn't see from us what we were playing for."
