Carreras: This is What Arbeloa Brought Us, and I Feel Comfortable Under Pressure
Wednesday 28-01-2026
Real Madrid defender Álvaro Carreras appeared in a press conference to talk about tomorrow's match against Benfica, in the final round of the Champions League group stage, at Estádio da Luz.

The Spanish defender said about tomorrow's match: "We know it will be a very important game for both teams because we need to win. The atmosphere will be fantastic. But we have to play in our usual style, as we did in the last few games. We will certainly get the three points."

He added: "What did Arbeloa bring to the team? He came with a clear idea: to be ourselves, to enjoy having the ball, to run and unite, especially in tough times, when we have to defend and don't feel comfortable without the ball. To enjoy, play in our style, move from side to side, and then the spaces and depth will appear."

He continued: "Did you wish Mourinho would coach you at Benfica? It's possible... I would have liked that; he's a legendary player and experienced in football. But now I am very happy with Arbeloa. Very happy. As for Mourinho... I wish him all the best."

He completed: "Football focuses on each match separately. We may enter it at our peak, but if something happens tomorrow, it will be the worst period for Real Madrid. We have to go out on the field, win, and think about La Liga, because we have a very tough match this weekend."

He noted: "I have had great nights at Estádio da Luz... and I know they will do their best. It will be a great night, but I hope we put on a great match."

He emphasized: "I love the pressure that revolves around this club (Real Madrid), I feel comfortable under it. I don't know if it's exhausting... but there must be pressure, otherwise, this club wouldn't be what it is."

He added: "Did you imagine having such a prominent role in your first year? In the end, you arrive at a new place feeling happy and excited as a young man achieving his dream of playing for the best club in the world. What I can say is that with confidence and having these players beside you, playing becomes very easy. Living with them is a dream. You learn from them, and they teach you a lot. I was confident that everything would go well, and that I had the level to play for Real Madrid... Yes, I was confident."

He followed: "I wish Benfica all the best. It hasn't been long since I left the club, but I am still very closely connected with the players and management. Keep fighting. It's a very tough club, the best in Portugal. And I am sure they will achieve good results."

He explained: "Did you talk to any of your former teammates at Benfica? I talked to many. I have a very good relationship with many of them, I can even say they are friends, at Benfica. Like Manu... Bresciani... but we will talk more after the match."

He concluded on whether the players changed their playing style: "We knew the match against Villarreal would be tough, and we had to press from the first minute. After the break, we entered the second half with high focus, and the goal came. We are all committed and want the best for the club, and we strive to win all the remaining titles."
