Barcelona Approaches the Top Eight in the Champions League
Thursday 22-01-2026
Barcelona is nearing securing its direct qualification to the round of sixteen in the Champions League, after achieving an important victory over Slavia Prague with a score of 4-2, in the penultimate round of the league stage, boosting its chances of finishing the competition within the top eight positions.

According to the Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo', Barcelona greatly benefited from the results of its direct competitors, advancing in the standings from fifteenth to ninth place with 13 points, before the final round against Copenhagen.

The newspaper explained that the losses of both Manchester City against Bodo/Glimt, Inter Milan against Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund against Tottenham, and Atalanta against Athletic Bilbao, along with Atletico Madrid's draw with Galatasaray, were decisive in improving Barcelona's position in the standings.

Barcelona currently has 13 points, but it lags in goal difference behind Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle, and Chelsea, who occupy positions that directly qualify for the round of sixteen. However, the direct match between Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle in the final round works in favor of the Catalan team, as a draw between the two teams would be the best scenario for Barcelona.

The newspaper also pointed out that Sporting Lisbon is equal with Barcelona in points and goal difference but comes behind due to scoring fewer goals, while Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Atalanta are also competing for top eight spots.

According to calculations, a win for Barcelona over Copenhagen in the final round, while maintaining a better goal difference than its direct competitors, would be enough to finish the league stage within the top eight and avoid playing the qualifying playoffs for the round of sixteen.

The report confirmed that Barcelona has a relatively comfortable position before the decisive round, although Copenhagen, which still has a chance to reach the playoffs, will not be an easy opponent.
