Simeone Opens the Door to Speculation About His Future and Talks About Facing Real Madrid
Thursday 08-01-2026
Argentinian Diego Pablo Simeone, the head coach of Atlético Madrid, confirmed that he does not rule out coaching any club or national team in the future, emphasizing that the world of football is ever-changing and does not recognize constants. He made these remarks during the press conference ahead of the match against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final.

Simeone said in his talk about his future: "Coaches never close doors, because football can change at any moment. From my current position, I am not closing any door."

Regarding the recent derby results, where Atlético has lost only one of the last seven matches against Real Madrid: "Each match is completely different from the previous one, and what happened at the Metropolitano has nothing to do with what we will play tomorrow."

The Argentine coach defended his compatriot Julián Álvarez, who hasn't scored in a month: "Julián has proven the kind of player he is, and words don't make the difference, actions do."

Simeone praised the Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth, considering him to be experiencing his most consistent period since joining the team. He added, "His physical strength provides us with different attacking options, and we need him to maintain the same ambition and competitive hunger."

Regarding absences, Simeone revealed that Pablo Barrios will not participate due to injury, noting that there are several options to replace him, such as Marcos Llorente, Conor Gallagher, and Jonny Cardoso, with the final decision to be made on match day.

In closing his remarks, Simeone commented on Saudi Arabia hosting the 2034 World Cup, saying: "We were received in a wonderful way, and the treatment was excellent. I hope the World Cup here will be as the people of this country imagine it."
