Allegri Explains Reason for Elimination from Coppa Italia
Sunday 07-12-2025
Massimiliano Allegri, AC Milan's coach, admitted that his team repeated “silly mistakes” that cost them their exit from the Coppa Italia after losing to Lazio 1-0 at the Olimpico, in a match characterized by competitiveness and extreme caution from both sides.

The match witnessed refereeing controversy over the corner kick from which Mattia Zaccagni's goal came, amid doubts about the ball touching Alessio Romagnoli before going out. However, the incident was not within the scope of video technology review. Despite that, Allegri acknowledged that the defensive positioning was poor during the goal moment, which gave Zaccagni the opportunity to score with a header.

The coach said: “We faced greater difficulty compared to the league match. We made several wrong passes in the first half and missed chances that should have been exploited. The match was tight, and whoever scores first would win, but we did not capitalize on opportunities and gave Lazio corners and fouls unnecessarily.”

He added: “This is not the first time. It happened against Cremonese and Pisa as well. We dominate but do not finish, and then we become vulnerable. We need to improve in the details.”

Regarding Leao's missed chance: “Leao moved well inside and outside the box, but when he is far from the penalty area, others must attack the spaces. We need everyone, and this defeat does not change our main goal: returning to the Champions League.”

He stressed: “It is unfortunate to be eliminated from the tournament; we wanted to go far, but now the focus is on the league and then the Italian Super Cup.”

On whether the elimination is a setback for a team leading the league jointly with Napoli, Allegri responded: “No, this is not a regression. Frustration is natural, but we must look ahead. There are two league matches before the Super Cup, and our goal is clear.”

He concluded about the upcoming match against Torino: “Do you know how many times Milan has won against Torino away in the last 12 years? Only once, and that was in empty stands. Therefore, we must focus on securing points in that match.”
