Atletico Madrid... The First to Snatch Points from Camp Nou in Its History
Monday 01-12-2025
The Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" recalled a prominent historical milestone before Barcelona's upcoming match against Atletico Madrid, after the Catalan club opened the new Camp Nou with a perfect record of victories, winning 4-0 against Athletic Bilbao and 3-1 against Alaves at the start of the stadium's new era.

According to the newspaper, Atletico Madrid represents a real threat to Barcelona's current winning streak, not only because they have achieved seven consecutive victories, but also due to their special history with Camp Nou. Atletico was the first club to snatch points at the new stadium on December 8, 1957, after Barcelona had secured six consecutive wins at the start of their journey at this stadium.

The newspaper explains that the first official match held at Camp Nou was on October 6, 1957, against Real Jaén in the Spanish League for the 1957/1958 season, ending with a 6-1 victory for Barcelona under the leadership of Domènec Balmanya and with the presence of the legend Ladislao Kubala, who scored one of the goals alongside doubles from Justo Tejada and Eulogio Martínez, in addition to the stadium's first-ever goal scored by the Uruguayan Ramón Alberto Villaverde. After five more victories, the first setback came in the seventh match against Atletico Madrid.

The newspaper added that players of that era emphasized the strength of Camp Nou, which at the time had a capacity of 99,053 spectators. Paraguayan forward Eulogio Martínez considered the stadium's size to be an advantage, but Atletico, led by coach Fernando Daucik, Kubala's brother-in-law, broke this dominance. Kubala opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 33rd minute after a pass from Evaristo, before Rafa equalized three minutes later. In the second half, Kubala scored from a penalty in the 53rd minute, then Peter leveled the score in the 72nd minute after a pass from Escudero, ending the match 2-2.

Thus, the report revisits history before a new encounter that may write another chapter between Barcelona and Camp Nou on one side and Atletico Madrid on the other.
