Another Catastrophic Night for Araujo Opens the File on His Critical Mistakes with Barcelona
Wednesday 26-11-2025
The Barcelona vs Chelsea match at Stamford Bridge witnessed one of the worst nights for team captain Ronald Araujo, after he made a misjudgment that led to his sending off before the end of the first half, which caused the team's collapse and a 3-0 defeat.

The newspaper "Sport" explained that despite Araujo's physical strength, speed, and development in building play, he still struggles with reading distances and timing his interventions, which was evident in the sending off after a strong tackle on Cucurella that earned him a second yellow card. This scene recalled a series of crucial matches in which Barcelona paid the price for the impulsiveness of their international defender.

The report pointed out that since the departure of Inigo Martinez, the team has lacked a defender capable of leading the advanced defensive line relied upon by Hans Flick. The Barcelona coach had admired Martinez’s abilities during the preparation period for the 2024/2025 season but was surprised by his move to the Saudi league just before the current season started, making stability at the backline a difficult task.

The newspaper also highlighted some of Araujo’s most prominent mistakes, including the 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan, where he participated to reinforce the defense but found himself directly responsible for the 3-3 and 4-3 goals that eliminated Barcelona from the tournament, which Paris Saint-Germain later won in the final.

The report also recalled Barcelona’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2023/2024 quarter-finals, when Araujo received a direct red card after a challenge on Parkourla, opening the way for Paris’s 4-1 comeback in the second leg (6-4 on aggregate). Criticism increased after statements from Luis Enrique in a previous documentary said: "Araujo is a great player, but he struggles when bringing the ball out."

The narrative did not omit what happened in the 2024 Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid, where Araujo caused two early goals due to poor positioning, then conceded a penalty leading to his sending off after receiving a second yellow card, ending with a 4-1 win for Real Madrid.

Nevertheless, Sport emphasized that judging Araujo solely on individual moments remains unfair, especially since he was an important figure in the dressing room and a key defensive pillar in past years. However, the repetition of his mistakes in crucial moments raises questions about his suitability for Flick’s style based on an advanced defense and high pressing.
