Ekramy El-Shahat, former Al Ahly star, attacked the critics of Hossam Hassan, the head coach of the Egyptian national team.
Hossam Hassan sparked controversy after his recent statements following the friendly match against Cape Verde, which ended with the Pharaohs winning on penalties.
El-Shahat said in a televised statement: "People need to support Hossam Hassan for the Africa Cup of Nations. People are waiting to pounce on Hossam Hassan because of his statements."
He added: "But there are some people who just love to attack Hossam Hassan. The man reached the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, and yet people still attack him."
