Chelsea Plans to Sign Ter Stegen in January
Tuesday 28-10-2025
Spanish newspaper "Sport" revealed that English club Chelsea has shown interest in signing German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen during the upcoming winter transfer window in January 2026.

The newspaper clarified that the German goalkeeper may move to the Premier League, especially given his declining role at FC Barcelona after 11 years of defending the team's colors, in addition to his salary being a burden on the Catalan club's budget.

The report noted that the arrival of goalkeeper Juan Garcia for 25 million euros and the renewal of Wojciech Szczesny's contract have limited Ter Stegen's playing opportunities this season. Since the German goalkeeper is expected to regain his fitness in January after recovering from a back injury, he is open to the idea of leaving in search of playing time that guarantees him participation with the German national team in the upcoming World Cup, especially after Manuel Neuer's international retirement.

The report confirmed that clubs like Monaco, Newcastle, Tottenham, and Manchester United had previously shown interest in the goalkeeper, but Chelsea, under coach Enzo Maresca, has recently joined the list of clubs seeking to acquire him, despite the team having Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who has not gained full confidence from the coaching staff.

Sport added that Barcelona does not rule out Ter Stegen's departure either on loan until the end of the season or through a permanent sale, as easing his salary could help improve the club's position under financial fair play regulations.

The newspaper also confirmed that Barcelona's priority is Ter Stegen's full recovery before making a final decision regarding his future, after a career that has spanned over 12 years with the Catalan club.
