Officially.. Cancellation of the Barcelona and Villarreal Match in Miami
La Liga announced in an official statement the cancellation of the Barcelona and Villarreal match in Miami, USA, following discussions with the event organizers for the match that was scheduled to take place on December 20, as part of the 17th round of La Liga.
The statement said: "The decision to cancel the organization of the Barcelona and Villarreal match was made due to the state of uncertainty that Spain has witnessed in recent weeks."
It added: "La Liga expresses its deep regret for this decision, as this project represented a unique historical opportunity for the promotion of Spanish football, but it could not continue, as holding an official match outside Spanish territory would have been an important step towards expanding the global presence of the competition and enhancing the status of players and the brand of Spanish football in a strategic market like the United States."
It further stated: "The project to hold the Barcelona and Villarreal match in Miami was fully compliant with federal regulations and did not affect the integrity of the competition, as confirmed by the relevant authorities monitoring the application of the regulations, but its suspension came for reasons beyond that."
It added: "In light of the increasing global competition, as leagues such as the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League continue to expand and attract resources, La Liga sees that this decision complicates growth opportunities for Spanish football. Abandoning such opportunities limits the clubs' ability to generate new resources, weakens the competition's appeal on an international level, and reduces its impact on the global sports economy."
Finally, La Liga thanked the clubs for their cooperation and willingness to participate in this project, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to developing the competition. La Liga will continue to work, as it always has, to bring Spanish football to all corners of the world, with an open, modern, and competitive vision that benefits clubs, players, and fans.
