Revolutionary Refereeing in the Madrid Derby
Thursday 25-09-2025
The Spanish capital's derby between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, scheduled for next Saturday at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, is witnessing an unprecedented refereeing revolution, according to the newspaper "Mundo Deportivo".

According to the source, the Spanish refereeing committee has decided to assign the role of video assistant referee to Carlos del Cerro, while Valentín Pizarro Gómez will serve as the assistant video referee. This step is historic as it marks the first time referees from the same city are appointed to the video technology crew.

On the pitch, the match will be officiated by referee Alberola Rojas, who is currently one of the most prominent Spanish referees, having previously managed the capital derby in September 2023 as well as the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup in January 2024.

The newspaper confirmed that the refereeing committee aims, through these decisions, to establish a new approach to managing major matches, enhancing transparency and breaking previous restrictions related to referees' affiliations to specific regions.
