Villarreal Coach Criticizes Refereeing After Defeat to Tottenham
Marcelino Garcia Toral, the head coach of Villarreal, expressed his dissatisfaction with the referee's performance in his team's match against Tottenham in the first round of the UEFA Champions League, asserting that two red cards were clear and not given to the English team.
Marcelino said: "Everyone saw the two red cards; they were clear, and the second one has no explanation; I do not understand why it was not shown," and added: "I do not understand how an international referee managing Champions League matches can ignore a red card in such a clear situation."
He spoke about the situation involving Simons that could have led to a second yellow card, saying: "The situation is clear because he had no intention of playing the ball, and we must accept that."
Regarding the match result, he clarified: "When you lose, you do not feel happy, especially with what happened on the field; I believe the defeat is unfair; football depends on goals, and Tottenham scored the goal."
Despite the loss, Marcelino expressed pride in his players' performance, stating: "I am very proud of the competitive level of the team; we performed strongly and left the opponent with no real chances to score."
Concerning the offensive aspect, he pointed out that "it is not simple; we must take into account the strength of the opponent and the place we are playing in."
He concluded his remarks by sending a message to player Luiz Junior, stating that mistakes are only made by players on the field, and as a coach, I am responsible for any mistakes that occur; if we lost, it is due to our inability to score and a lack of luck.
