Tuesday 16-09-2025
All eyes are directed on Wednesday evening to the Allianz Arena in Germany, where a strong match is hosted between Chelsea, the champion of the Club World Cup, and Bayern Munich, one of the top contenders for the UEFA Champions League title in its new edition.

The referees' committee of the European Union announced the assignment of Spanish referee José María Sánchez Martínez to officiate the match, marking his first appearance with both teams in European competitions. He will be assisted by Raúl Caballero and Iñigo Prieto, while Guillermo Cuadra Fernández will serve as the fourth official, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be overseen by Carlos del Cerro.

This match will be the fifth that Sánchez Martínez officiates this season, following three matches in La Liga and one in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. He is also preparing to participate in the Under-20 World Cup and is the top candidate to represent Spain in the upcoming World Cup.

Sánchez Martínez has previously officiated matches for several German clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Leipzig, Mönchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Union Berlin, in addition to the German national team.

He has also led European matches for English clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and West Ham, as well as the English national team, but he has never officiated European matches for Chelsea or Bayern Munich.
