Atletico Madrid and Liverpool Plan to Honor Jota in Champions League Match
Monday 15-09-2025
Atletico Madrid and Liverpool are set to organize a special tribute for the late player Diogo Jota and his brother Andrea Silva, coinciding with the anticipated clash between the two teams at Anfield on Wednesday, September 17, as part of the first round of the group stage in the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League.

Jota, who tragically passed away along with his brother in a car accident while heading to England two months ago, had previously represented both clubs. This led Atletico Madrid to propose the tribute in collaboration with Liverpool, while discussions are still ongoing between the parties to coordinate the final details and obtain the necessary approvals from UEFA if required.

It is worth noting that Atletico Madrid and Portuguese club Porto had previously honored the player in a friendly match held at the Estádio do Dragão last August, in recognition of his career that spanned both teams.

Jota joined Atletico Madrid in July 2016 from Paços de Ferreira for €7.2 million, and was later loaned to Porto and then Wolverhampton, which activated the purchase option in June 2018, before moving to Liverpool, where he continued to shine until his untimely death.
