Officially.. Manchester City announces the renewal of Rico Lewis's contract
Manchester City announced today, Friday, via its official website, the renewal of young defender Rico Lewis's contract for an additional five years, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.
Lewis, who is 20 years old, is one of the standout graduates of the City Academy, having joined at the age of eight before gradually making his way through the various age groups to reach the first team during the historic treble season of 2022/23.
Since his debut, the young player has established himself as an indispensable element in Pep Guardiola's lineup, having played 97 matches for the first team and scored 5 goals, contributing to the achievement of seven major titles with the club, including: the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League (twice), the FA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the Community Shield.
Despite starting as a right-back, Lewis has shown great tactical flexibility in playing in various positions, especially in the attacking midfield, enhancing his value within the City's system.
On the international front, Lewis has represented England at various age levels, reaching the first team, where he has played five international matches with the 'Three Lions'.
In statements following the signing of the new contract, Lewis said: "Manchester City means everything to me, so signing this new contract is a very special moment for me and my family. I am still learning and developing as a player, and I know that continuing to work with Pep and his coaching staff and our amazing players will help me become better."
He added: "I have spent most of my life at this club, and staying here longer makes me extremely happy. It is an honor and a privilege to represent City every day and to play in front of our fans who have always supported me."
He confirmed: "I will do everything I can to help the team achieve more success this season and beyond."
For his part, Manchester City's Director of Football, Hugo Vieira, expressed his happiness with Lewis's long-term commitment to the club, saying: "Rico embodies everything we aspire to be at Manchester City. He is an incredibly talented player, and despite his young age, he has gained significant experience. He has a unique mentality and a constant desire to improve, and he is a role model for academy graduates. We are confident that Rico will play an important role in achieving more success for the club in the future."
