Mariska Clarifies the Status of Palmer and Delap Before Facing Brentford
Friday 12-09-2025
Enzo Mariska, Chelsea's coach, held his press conference today to discuss the team's preparations for the match against Brentford tomorrow in the fourth round of the Premier League, explaining the status of several injured players or those in doubt before the important match.

Regarding Cole Palmer, Mariska said: "Palmer participated in training yesterday for the first time, not the entire training session; we have a session this evening and will try to ensure he is okay, otherwise he will miss tomorrow's match."

He added: "He is recovering from an injury; it’s not about managing him but about recovery. When he is available, we have to manage him due to the number of matches."

About Liam Delap, Mariska confirmed: "He will be out for about 10 to 12 weeks."

On Reece James and his participation with England: "When any player joins their national team, they are ready to play the minutes the coach sees fit. It’s not in my hands; when Reece is here, we try to manage him as best as we can. Reece James shows he is ready to play two or three matches a week."

Regarding Colwill's injury, he said: "His call-up for the Champions League squad depends on our level of participation there. His injury is to the anterior cruciate ligament, so he will be out not for a month or two, but for six or seven or eight months. He will definitely return, but that is not a concern for us."

On the departure of Nicolas Jackson: "It’s very easy since he is a player at Bayern Munich. I sent him a message wishing him all the best. He was performing well while he was here, so I wish him all the luck."

On Alejandro Garnacho, Mariska said: "He is working well, but he arrived here not fully fit. He needs to put in effort; he is working well, and we will see. We hope to give him some playing minutes."

Regarding the match against Brentford: "The Brentford match is tough as usual; it was so in the two matches last year. The Premier League is the best in the world because it’s tough against any club, and we expect that tomorrow."

On the start of the season and improving the team: "Perhaps regarding the players, there are always aspects we can improve. Improving players often improves the team. We start by adding more solutions in terms of structure and dynamics. I believe we can still add solutions."

On Cucurella and player development, he said: "It’s always about the players. As we said with Koko, Enzo, Levi, and others, the players' situation was different from what it is today. They want to develop and learn. We provide them with the necessary tools, but they are developing."

On Enzo Fernandez: "When you come from another country, you have to adapt. Enzo is a good player; he faced difficulties at the beginning of last season regarding what we were asking of him, but he is much better now that he understands that. Enzo is an attacking midfielder, and I hope he continues to be so."

On evaluating the transfer market: "We have a good squad; I said I was impressed with it a year ago in a press conference. Since then, we have tried to make some changes, but overall the squad is very good."

On the number 9 player option: "The only player is Joao, and Joao Pedro can play in that position. We can think of Tarec as a number 9 after targeting him against Fulham."

On the charges against Chelsea from the FA: "I know from the club that they are satisfied; I have no idea. I want to focus on the pitch, and that is something I can control, and the players are not worried about that."
