Kompany Discusses Hamburg Match and Confidence in Players
Friday 12-09-2025
The Belgian coach Vincent Kompany, head coach of Bayern Munich, spoke about tomorrow's match against Hamburg in the third round of the German league at Allianz Arena.

He said about the match: "We are always the favorites at home, but every match carries its risks, as all teams come to get points. What happened in the past has nothing to do with their current coach Merlin Polzin or me personally; they have great confidence after their promotion, which makes them dangerous. They enter the match with full confidence after a series of victories last season. The match also has a special character as it is between two major cities, with a flavor of the north-south rivalry. It is a match with a rich history, and we are looking forward to it."

He added about his relationship with Hamburg: "I haven't played for many clubs in my career, only three, but I have maintained a constant connection with them. My time at Hamburg was not easy, either athletically or personally; I lost my mother during that period, and my sister was suffering from cancer, but I made many friendships, and the club was always by my side. The bond between me and them still exists. Now my focus is on Bayern Munich, and I am trying to build the same relationship here. This is the special aspect of our profession: building strong ties with clubs, and this has been achieved wonderfully in my first season."

Regarding his last match with Hamburg against Bayern: "I remember that match well; after it, I decided to leave. In 2008, there were the Olympics in China, and Hamburg brought me back and then kept me on the bench in Munich; I was very angry [laughing]. My national team was playing in the semifinals, and I was not allowed to participate, which I could not accept in principle. But other than that, my experience with Hamburg was great, and I have beautiful memories. My father tried to convince me to stay, but I chose to leave, and it was not a wrong decision to move to Manchester City."

He continued about Nicolas Jackson: "The first period until the next international break will be very important for him, as he did not go through a full preparation period with Chelsea. He is an athlete by nature and will not need a long time to reach 100% physically. We just need to gradually bring him back into the rhythm of matches. He is a special player with quality and has scored goals in the Premier League, and I believe we will benefit from his potential quickly."

Regarding the readiness of the players: "I have complete confidence, 100%, in the available players. It is true that the squad is a bit smaller, but the most important thing is that I am happy to rely on any player. Of course, there are elements that cannot be directly replaced, like Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Eto, but there is no player in my team that I am not satisfied with fielding."

About the physical condition of the players: "All players returned in good condition from the international break."

He concluded about Jackson's role: "We have great attacking flexibility. His style fits perfectly with the other forwards, and he can play alongside any of them. He will have an important role this season."
