Sports circles are awaiting a decision from the executive committee of the European football association regarding the request from AC Milan and Como to hold an Italian league match in Perth, Australia, in February 2026, due to the San Siro stadium being occupied by the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The executive committee, which will hold its meeting on September 11, 2025, in the Albanian capital Tirana, is set to discuss the request submitted by the two clubs after receiving approval from the Italian and Australian football associations.

This comes amid a division within UEFA between supporters and opponents of holding the match outside Europe, as UEFA President Alexander Ceferin and European Commissioner Glen Micallef oppose the idea due to concerns about the potential for similar cases in the future.

The Italian Football Federation believes that holding the match in Australia will enhance the popularity of the Italian league and generate significant financial returns, with Federation President Gravina supporting the approval of the request.

However, reports indicate that the opposing side is gaining strength, making the outcome of the decision uncertain, with the possibility of a postponement or rejection of the request, which could lead to increased tension between Milan, Como, and UEFA.

These discussions come amid reservations from UEFA following a similar request from Villarreal and Barcelona to hold a Spanish league match in Miami, which adds to the sensitivity of the issue for the European football governing body.
