Flick Faces New Challenges with FIFA Virus Injuries
Thursday 11-09-2025
In the first break of the 2025/2026 Spanish league due to national team commitments, Frenkie de Jong suffered an injury with the Netherlands national team, becoming the fifth player to be injured during Hans Flick's tenure, bringing the total number of injuries to 15 since the 2021/2022 season.

De Jong's injury means he will miss the upcoming match against Valencia on September 14 at the Johan Cruyff Stadium, in addition to the absences of Balde, Gavi, and Ter Stegen, which increases the team's struggles at the start of the current season despite positive results.

Since Flick took charge, Barcelona has faced four breaks due to injuries, with last season seeing many significant absences such as Christensen, Ansu Fati, and Marc Bernal, in addition to injuries to Pedri and Araújo during international competitions.

In the October 2024 break, problems persisted with Lamine Yamal's injury, bringing the number of absences to eight in the Champions League match against Young Boys.

Despite these circumstances, the team achieved 11 wins, 3 draws, and only one loss during the break period, scoring 17 goals, some of which occurred during the pre-season, with the most notable injury being Gavi's in November 2023 that sidelined him for a year.

The most challenging period was in September 2022 when both Koundé, Araújo, De Jong, and Memphis were injured, reflecting the difficulty of the schedule and match pressure. The issue of international match pressure remains a constant topic of discussion without clear solutions, as Paris Saint-Germain currently suffers from the absence of Dembélé and Dori, who will not participate in the match against Barcelona in the Champions League.

It is worth noting that Pedri played nearly 70 matches in his first full season with the first team between Barcelona and the European and Olympic teams, which is an excessive number that affects the players' health condition.
