The Iraqi Union Grants Al-Zawraa and Al-Police Special Support
Monday 08-09-2025
The Al-Police and Al-Zawraa teams received direct support from the Iraqi Football Union, as the start of the 2025-2026 Iraqi Stars League approaches, with the first round set to begin in mid-September.

This support comes in light of the two teams' external commitments, as Al-Police represents Iraq in the Asian Champions League as the league champion from last season, while Al-Zawraa competes in the Asian Champions League 2 as the runner-up.

The Iraqi Union had set September 13 as the date for the league's kickoff, with three matches scheduled: Al-Baghdad Secretariat against Diyala, Al-Student against Zakho, and Newroz against Electricity, while the match between Al-Zawraa and Al-Police was to take place the following day; however, it was officially postponed by the Union's decision to give both teams ample space to prepare for their continental participation and not disrupt their busy schedule.

Al-Police will begin its Asian journey in the elite championship on September 15 with a strong match against Qatari Al-Sadd, hosting it at Al-Zawraa Stadium at 9:15 PM Baghdad and Doha time, while Al-Zawraa will start its campaign in the Asian Champions League 2 on September 17 against Indian team Goa on their home ground, as the management of Al-Nawras decided to travel to India six days before the match to acclimate to the conditions there.

The Iraqi Union confirmed its full support for Al-Nawras and the Green Lyre, announcing that the draw for the rest of their local matches will take place on the 12th of this month, considering their external participation schedule.

At the same time, the Union did not postpone the match for Iraq's third representative abroad, Zakho team, in the first round of the league, due to the sufficient time available before playing their first match in the Gulf Champions League.

It is worth mentioning that the new season of the Iraqi Stars League will witness a qualitative leap by introducing modern technologies, most notably the 'spider camera,' which is ready to operate by the broadcasting company, in addition to using an artificial intelligence system for the league draw for the first time, similar to major European championships, ensuring transparency and fairness for all participating clubs.
