Deco Continues Work After Transfer Market Closure
Thursday 04-09-2025
After the closure of the summer transfer market, Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, has critical tasks to complete, primarily renewing contracts for some players whose ties to the club expire in June 2026.

Barcelona concluded the transfer window with three new signings: Juan Garcia, Marcus Rashford, and Rony Bardji, in addition to ten departures, recording a positive balance of over 18 million euros, including retained percentages from previous sales.

Frenkie de Jong, one of the team's key pillars, has a contract that ends in 2026, and his renewal was stalled due to issues with his former agent, Ali Dorson. After resolving the dispute, negotiations have become smoother with his new agent, Sebastian Ledor, who met with Deco on August 20.

Both parties confirmed that there are no issues, and they agreed to continue negotiations after the market closure. It is expected that De Jong's contract will be renewed until 2029, with deferred payments distributed over the new contract's years.

As for Eric Garcia, whose contract also ends in 2026, talks have begun between his agent Ivan de la Peña and Deco, amid the player's desire to continue after gaining the trust of coach Hans Flick, as he started in all three official matches this season.

Although he considered leaving last season, the player now wants to renew, and those around him confirm that the agreement will be reached without complications.

In the case of Marc Bernal, there is no need for new negotiations, as it was previously agreed to extend his contract until 2029 after he turned 18. He has been registered as a first-team player wearing the number 22 shirt, and it is expected that the renewal will be officially announced as soon as he recovers from his long injury, as he is expected to be ready for the upcoming Valencia match.

There are also two other players whose contracts expire in 2026: Andreas Christensen, who refused to leave this summer, and there are currently no plans to renew his contract, and Robert Lewandowski, who will turn 38 by the end of the season. His future will be assessed later based on performance and the transfer market.
