Lassana Diarra Seeks 65 Million from FIFA and Belgian Federation
The French star Lassana Diarra, a former player of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, aims to obtain an amount of "65 million euros" in his case against the International Football Federation "FIFA" and the Belgian Football Federation.
Diarra's case is a legal dispute between the player and FIFA, concerning player transfer regulations. The issue began when Diarra unilaterally terminated his contract with the Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014 without just cause, following a salary reduction.
The Russian club filed a complaint with FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber, which ordered Diarra to pay compensation of 10 million euros, with any new club he joins sharing responsibility for the compensation.
Diarra, for his part, filed a lawsuit against FIFA and the Belgian Football Federation in a Belgian court after FIFA prevented him from transferring to the Belgian club Charleroi due to its refusal to issue an international transfer certificate.
The Belgian court referred the case to the European Court of Justice, which issued a historic ruling on October 4, 2024, stating that some FIFA rules, particularly Article 17 of the player transfer regulations, conflict with European Union laws regarding freedom of movement and competition, as they restrict players' freedom to transfer between clubs and hinder competition among European clubs.
